Grandpa Harvard Nielsen Jensen

Here's a tribute to one of my greatest heroes, my grandpa Harvard Nielsen Jensen.

There are three main things I've always loved about Grandpa Jensen. First, his laugh. He's got the greatest laugh in the world, one that makes anyone else lose it when they hear it. My grandparents used to do laughing exercises together. Grandma had Grandpa start laughing and that got her going and they would just laugh for several minutes every day for the health of it.

Second, Grandpa's hugs. This guy invented the bear hug. It was something like being harpooned, pulled in, and then being repeatedly squeezed 5 or 6 times in a pretty effective Heimlich-type technique, ending with a few good thumps on the back. That sounds pretty violent but the result was actually the greatest, warmest, and most wonderful feeling of grandfatherly love ever to be transmitted by way of a hug.

Finally, Grandpa was the epitome of a great husband. He lived for Grandma Jensen all his life. His concern for her well-being and comfort was unparalleled. In the last several months of her life, he was constantly doing everything he could to keep her comfortable even as he was struggling with his health. His grandkids don't have any excuses for not being the best spouses on the planet. We had one of the greatest examples in our Grandpa.

Almost exactly 4 months to the day after my Grandma Jensen passed away, Grandpa Jensen decided it was time for him to join her and passed away very peacefully on August 19th.
